Reimagining Primary and On-Demand Care

CHALLENGE

Contemplating the future of primary and on-demand care in a diverse urban/suburban/rural market with over 2 million people, a high-performing integrated health system wanted to explore how it might develop a prototype primary care environment that balanced emerging models of care, new technologies, and the evolving expectations of patient- and provider-consumers in the marketplace.

  • 20+ stakeholder interviews

  • Baseline mission, vision + values validation

  • Operational analysis / time-motion studies

  • Clinical functionality assessment

  • Post-occupancy analysis of recently constructed primary care environments

  • Shadowing + direct observation

  • Ethnographic research

  • Patient consumer demographic analysis

  • Patient consumer experiential analysis

  • Provider consumer experiential analysis

  • Co-creation sessions to explore tomorrow’s healthcare and the consumer experience

  • Prototype development + iteration

APPROACH

In partnership with with a comprehensive design team, I provided advanced thought leadership and design services focused around the future of primary/on-demand care and healthcare consumerism. We actively facilitated multiple interdisciplinary stakeholder meetings to drive alignment on the best path forward for design of the primary care environment of the future. Included in this was a deep dive into market-specific consumer metrics that proves invaluable in charting the right path forward.

RESULTS

A deep dive into the consumer segments and expectation of four different communities within the client’s service area demonstrated that a one-size-fits-all approach to primary and on-demand care would not lead to the desired success. Pivoting, we were able to establish 35 different design drivers that could be included or excluded in the design of primary/on-demand care sites based on the expectations of patient- and provider-consumers in each service location’s primary catchment area.
